I’ve been on and off in therapy for the past twelve years. In that time, I’ve learnt a few things. And one thing that I highly appreciate is my Mental Health Recovery Kit.

If I start spiralling, there are a few things that I do to stop me from hitting rock bottom and/or relapsing:
- Grounding
- Mental Health Recovery Kit
I’ll practice grounding for about ten minutes before dipping into my kit, but if you’ve not got one – why not make one?
Mine consists of a blanket with my favourite texture, a drink I like, a snack I like, and at least two activities. Whether it’s just a fidget, playing a specific video game, or watching a film.
I recently had to use my kit, so this is what was in it:
- A bumblebee blanket that is fluffy like a baby blanket
- Zombie Army Trilogy was my game distraction
- 28 Days Later was my film of choice
- Halo Top Ice Cream was the snack I chose
- And a bottle of sugar-free Stockwell Cola.
Depending on what I have available, my kit can either be an actual box of stuff or just a list of stuff I have around the house that I can go and acquire.
So, have a think about a few things that bring you immense comfort – write a list or put them in a specific place together – and when you’re feeling down or spiralling, go and grab them.
