The Time I Felt Right – The Whitby Cottage

Daily writing prompt
Tell us about a time when you felt out of place.

You can tell that this prompt was written by someone who has rarely felt out of place.
So, as someone who always is, I’d like to tell you about the time I felt… right.

Circled up on the couch with my nesting partner, my friends sat on the surrounding chairs, and even on the floor, we were having a movie marathon.

It was funny because we’d just gotten home from the Goth festival, I’d cooked tea, and now we were watching Shrek…
I had a draft blowing on my neck due to the old window behind me not stopping the outside air from seeping in, but I had my Bagpuss microwave heat pack on my lap. We laughed and talked, mocked the film and sang along to the songs.

I made the joke that they were my children – because I was the one who’d organised the entire holiday. It was short, but it was lovely.

Sat there with my friends around and my partner, for the first time, I didn’t feel out of place. I felt almost normal.
It didn’t matter how uncomfortable the couch was or how loud the whistle was from the cracks in the window frame. It didn’t matter how loud my friends were being as they laughed at the films.

I was by the sea, well-fed, and surrounded by the people I loved.

I hope to feel like that again, someday.

Of course, this isn’t the only time I’ve felt like this. Every time I’m with my loved ones, alone and enjoying a pastime, I feel the same way – content.

But those moments are fleeting and few and far between. Whether I’m just with friends, just with my nesting partner, or with everyone… Sometimes I think about it and cry because it feels like it might never happen again…

I hope I’m wrong.
