Someone’s Here – Horror Flash Fiction

Welcome to Horror Fiction Fridays.
I’ve selected several horror prompts and created fiction and art for each.

This Week’s Prompt:
We’re Not Alone

The following story discusses house invasion.

There’s nothing quite like silence after a long day of work… But it doesn’t always go as planned.

Sitting on the couch with a bowl of takeaway curry and rice, it’s peaceful as I watch TV. This is the first time in weeks that I’ve been alone.

Usually, my roommates are here, bothering me and forcing me to watch sports or action films – while all I want to watch is sci-fi.

As 10 PM approaches, I place my bowl on the coffee table and lie down. Don’t fall asleep on the couch.

I slowly drift off as I click to play the next episode. My eyes slowly shut, feeling heavy.

Suddenly, I’m wide awake when I hear a giggle behind me. I sit up and pause the TV. My breathing is uneven, my head pounding from the sudden awakening.

I look around the apartment. My roommates aren’t home; it’s pitch black outside, and the only light is coming from the soft glow of the TV. “Hello?” I say aloud, not expecting an answer.

Silence remains.

After a few minutes of waiting and listening, the TV goes onto the eco setting – powering the screen down while it’s paused – plunging the apartment into darkness.

I remain still. The only sounds I can hear are my uneven breathing and erratic heartbeat.

Minutes pass, and I’m calm, tired once more. I pick up the TV remote and press play – accidentally pressing it twice.

The TV comes back to life but doesn’t play, but the giggle repeats.

I stand up, spinning around to see who’s behind me.

The soft glow of the TV allowing me to see partway down the hallway, towards the bedrooms. A figure stands there. Short, petite, and smiling.

Her wide smile shows her white teeth as she tilts her head to the side. I notice the knife in her hand as she twirls it, the silver metal glimmering in the darkness.

“Who are you?”

“Jeepers creepers, where’d you get those peepers…” She sings softly, her voice crackling as she tilts her head to the other side. “Jeepers creepers, where’d you get those eyes…”

The girl takes a step forward, and my instinct is to run. I turn towards the hall and head toward the door before realising the door is open.

As it slowly swings open, a lanky and towering man steps in. I step back, hearing the girl approach from behind as the man approaches me.

The TV powers down, the apartment is plunged into darkness, and all I can see is his hollowed-out, glowing eyes.
